Life becomes more simple when you realise that big problems don’t always need big answers.
At the start of every semester, I would look through what assignments I had and when they were due. The first two semesters were spent learning how to learn again, having spent a year out of school. I had to figure out what worked for me. In the beginning it was quite overwhelming. One exam clashed with another. Three assignments due in the same week. At the time, looking at the mountain of work, I couldn’t work out how this would all get done in time. How I was going to get through it all.
We assemble our life, action by action — Marcus Aurelius
After a few semesters, it didn’t seem so bad. I figured out what worked for me, and I definitely figured out what didn’t. More importantly, I realised that getting through the workload in a way that I was proud of wasn’t by thinking about it all day, but rather not thinking about it much at all.
I knew what was coming, and when things needed to be handed in. But I turned my focus to just turning up and doing what I knew I needed to do. It allowed me to manage my expectations and the pressure I put on myself. The volume of work over a semester is overwhelming. The volume of work over a day isn’t so much.
Many mickles make a muckle — George Washington
What is required of me today?
Life in its simplest form is about what we can do right now. Not a week, a month, or a year from now. Today. Gaining more knowledge, building a better physique, getting experience, and becoming a good person is about sweating the small stuff. Because the small stuff matters. The habits we cultivate today are a small window into who we are tomorrow.
This is how we wrestle with life, deal with our problems, overcome challenges, and become a better person. Not through huge leaps and bounds. Through putting one foot in front of the other. One lecture, one workout, one lesson, or one page at a time.
Well-being is realised by small steps, but it is truly no small thing — Zeno
